Lizards of the Everglades.
Lizards.
In the Florida Everglades there are lots of lizards that like to bask in the sun and the swampy heat, keeping one eye open for their next meal to wander by.
Anole lizard.
The native Everglades green anole lizard, which many people call the chameleon as it can change it's color at will, was once very common throughout the Everglades. Now, it is being gradually replaced in the pinelands and hardwood hammocks by the exotic brown anole which is a native of Cuba.
Reef Gecko.
The Florida Reef Gecko is the only Gecko that is a native of the Everglades. It is found in the
hardwood hammocks and pinelands under rocks and leaves, and is the smallest lizard in North America.
Photographing The Lizards.
Photography Tips.
Photographing lizards is a great experience, best done at dawn or sunset,
but can be done all day as the lizard likes to lie basking in the sun. Do
not get too close to the lizard they are very wary of movement and will
quickly vanish if frightened, so a fairly long zoom is needed at least a
300mm or longer. Manual focus is best as the coloring of a lizard can easily
throw off the auto focus.
